What happens to a face at the door

Planned flow. Synthetic face, no real person.

Every face. Checked.

The camera will scan each face and check it against the list of people reported for theft.

No match.Deleted.

The camera will delete the face code at once. No visitor list. No tracking between shops.

Two shops report.A person checks.

One report warns only your door. A trained person must confirm that two reports show the same person before nearby members get alerts.

A possible match.You decide.

Staff will compare the picture with the person in front of them. An alert is never a reason to accuse, search or stop anyone.

Questions owners ask

Is this legal?

It can be. UK law allows a business to use facial recognition to prevent crime only when it is necessary, proportionate and run with strong safeguards. We will finish the legal steps before any camera checks a face.

Do you keep everyone's face?

No. A face code that does not match a report will be deleted at once. We will keep the picture of a person only when a report about them is on the list.

How accurate is it?

We do not know yet. Face matching and hidden-item alerts both make mistakes. Before launch we will test both and publish the results, including false matches by age, sex and skin tone.

Do I need new cameras?

Probably one camera at your door, set up to see faces clearly. Hidden-item alerts are planned to use the cameras inside. We will confirm which cameras work during the pilot.
